WW1 Commemorative Poppy Sales to Support Age UK NYD Veterans Project

Posted on Wednesday, 23 January 2019 3:38 pm | Category: Darlington Hundreds of hand-crafted poppies created for a special commemorative display are set to be sold to help support Darlington veterans.

Visitors to the Head of Steam – Darlington Railway Museum over the past four years will have seen a series of magnificent hangings of poppies, adorning the footbridge.

Each of the poppies were knitted, crocheted and crafted by local people following an overwhelming response to an appeal for help from the museum to commemorate the 2,236 railwaymen killed as part of the 100th anniversary of the conflict.

As the museum’s period of commemoration now comes to an end and its current exhibition looking at the contribution of women to the work of the railways in WW1 draws to a close, museum staff were keen to use the poppies to support ex-service personnel in the area.

The Mayor of Darlington, Cllr Veronica Copeland, who is also the council’s Armed Forces Champion, joined members of the Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington Veterans Support Group and staff at the museum today (Wednesday 23 January) to launch the special fundraising campaign which will see the poppies ‘sold’ to visitors at the museum for a donation.

All money raised will go to Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington Veterans Support Group which takes place at Bradbury House every Wednesday morning at 10am.

Sarah Gouldsbrough, learning and access officer at Head of Steam, explained:

“The museum has been working with Age UK North Yorkshire &Darlington on a number of projects, as well as finding ways to support the health and wellbeing of visitors, volunteers, staff and local people; and the veterans support group seemed a fitting choice for this fundraising initiative.”

Simon Davidson, CEO at Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington said:

“We are pleased to have developed close links with the Head of Steam museum over the past few years. We are immensely grateful that they have chosen our veterans support service to receive the proceeds of the poppy sales. The money raised will go a long way towards supporting our project and helping us to continue to meet the unique needs of older veterans in Darlington.”
