We all need someone to talk to, but not all of us are lucky enough to have someone. Loneliness is a big issue for people in later life in the UK. Half of all people aged 75 and over live alone, and 1 in 10 people aged 65 or over say they are always or often feel lonely – that’s just over a million people.

Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington volunteers are offering companionship to lonely and isolated people in communities across Darlington & North Yorkshire through their Befriending service, the award-winning Good Friends scheme and also offer specialist Veteran’s telephone befriending support through Ex-Forces Support.

The charity’s befriending services have already helped a large number of people such as Diane and her befriender Fiona. Fiona was first matched to Diane over five years ago as they shared similar interests, their friendship has become stronger as they’ve got to know each other over the years and their time together is now a highlight of both of their weeks.

To celebrate the valuable role that volunteer befrienders play in preventing loneliness the 1st to the 7th November is nationally recognized as befriending week. Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington will be running a number of special events across the region which are open to current volunteers and anyone considering getting involved in befriending.

In Darlington there will be an information stall at the Dolphin Centre on Monday 4th November between 10am and 1pm. There will also be an opportunity to discover befriending for yourself at a drop-in at Three4 Darlington in Priestgate on Thursday 7th November between 10:30am and 12:30pm (opposite the Mecure Hotel entrance) where you can find out more about how you can get involved over complimentary refreshments.

In North Yorkshire there will be a drop-in afternoon on Tuesday 5th November at Age UK Northallerton at 1 Zetland Street where you can find out more information about Good Friends and Ex-Forces Support. Also on Tuesday 5th November there will be a stand at the Station in Richmond between 12pm and 4pm for you to find out more about how Good Friends is helping combat loneliness across Richmondshire and discover how you can get involved.
