Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington Partners with Local Business to Ease Elderly Shopping Woes

Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington have launched a new shopping service in partnership with Thorpe Farm Centre near Barnard Castle to help older people who are struggling with food supplies. The charity which was growing increasingly concerned over infection risks associated with older, vulnerable people going into the supermarkets has designed the service with Thorpe Farm Centre proprietor Paul Barkes to reduce the risk of infection to a minimum.
The products which features a mix of locally sourced fresh produce, meat and vegetables alongside firm family favourite brands are packed in a hygienic packing area separate from the shop and delivered by charity volunteers who are trained and equipped to reduce the risk of spreading Coronavirus. Shopping can be ordered by calling 01325 741 496 and payment can be made over the phone by card.
Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington Chief Executive Officer Helen Hunter said:
“We were growing increasingly concerned with sending volunteer shoppers to the supermarkets multiple times a week and increasing their risk of contracting and spreading the virus. By working directly with Thorpe Farm Centre, we will be able to reduce this risk and deliver great quality food to older people in as little as 48 hours.”
The charity is also working with Thorpe Farm Centre to begin delivering hot two course meals to older people in Lower Teesdale for only £5 a day after success in Richmond & Darlington working with The White Swan, Gilling West and the charity’s own Café Refresh in Darlington with further expansion of the service expected shortly. Hot meals can be booked on 01325 741 492 up to 11am on the day required.
