A Goodbye Message from Gillian

Posted on Monday, 1 October 2018 12:07 pm | Category: General News After nine years as CEO of Age UK Darlington, and latterly Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington, Gillian Peel is retiring, read her farewell message here...

When I walked through the doors at Bradbury House in Darlington in 2009, I knew I had found my perfect match. There was plenty to do – lots of things that needed modernising, plus funding was being cut massively back, but the main thing I noticed was what an amazing group of people I was joining and the difference the staff and volunteers were making to the lives of older people in Darlington.

Older people frequently receive an ill-informed bad press – every ‘ism’ is banned in the media apart from Ageism.  At AUKNYD we hope to provide all the crucial and much needed services such as free Information and Advice (£2 mil+ difference in income for older people in 2017-18), Veterans support, Befriending, Dementia and Care Services etc. but we also aim to create a positive and life enhancing experience for everyone engaged with our services. Whether attending a lunch club, Zumba classes, Line Dancing or even our famous Ukulele Group, every attendee should go away feeling much more positive.

I would like to thank the Trustees, Staff and especially the volunteers who have helped us to achieve this goal and at the same time let me have such fun! Our special events are legendry, who could forget our horses, Elvis, the 50s dances, USA Icons, 100 Years of the RAF and other such events? We received the national LGC Award in 2015 for our Good Friends, which was judged to be the best Health and Social Care project in the UK. Our crowning glory was achieving the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Services in June with the party in August, this award is the equivalent to the MBE for the organisation and was given in recognition of our outstanding volunteers and the contribution they make.

I have had so much support from staff, volunteers and customers within the organisation it has been an amazing and unforgettable experience. I would also like to thank my external colleagues who have provided such brilliant support and friendship.
I will miss you all very much.

Thank you everyone

Gillian X
