Our History

We've operated since 1989, previously under the name Age Concern Darlington. In 2017, we became Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington.

1960's - Age Concern's Beginnings

Age Concern Durham began in the 1960's including the Darlington area in its remit.

1989 - Age Concern Darlington Officially Launches

In 1989, we broke away from Age Concern in Durham to become Age Concern Darlington, an independent local charity, registered with the Charity Commission and with its own constitution and Board of Trustees.

2005 - Our First Information & Advice Centre Opens

In May 2005, a second outlet was added with the addition of our highly successful information and advice centre at 9 Clark's Yard. Trading was established at 11 Clark’s Yard to provide insurance and holiday opportunities for older people. In 2011, the Information & Advice Centre moved to Beaumont Street in Darlington Town Centre.

2010 - Age Concern becomes Age UK

On 19th April 2010 Age Concern Darlington, whilst remaining a local independent charity, joined with other organisations from the merger between Age Concern and Help the Aged and became known as Age UK Darlington. At midnight on 31 March 2011 Age UK Darlington became a company limited by guarantee.

2017 - Darlington & North Yorkshire Merge

In September 2017, Age UK Darlington and Age UK North Yorkshire merged to become Age UK North Yorkshire & Darlington. The outcome of the merger is an organisation better equipped to support older people across both Darlington and the North Yorkshire region.
